Period 0 - Jazz I Assignments

Today I have not asked any homework of you. Next Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, we will be collecting all instruments that belong to the school. We must do this for cleaning purposes, and for inventory. I will send more specific guidelines for how this will work, but for now, practice the instrument for a few more days. If you are continuing with music next year, there is a chance you can keep the instrument over the summer. I will let you know about that at a later time as well. Turn in this assignment so I know you have read it.

Monday (6/1): 8th grade instrument return

During this time, musicians are seeking ways to share their creativity. Troy Andrews, stage name Trombone Shorty, is one such musician, based in New Orleans, LA. Watch this moving interview and leave a response in the comments section answering the following questions.

As you've begun to do in your band or orchestra class, this time, you will also be investigating a jazz musician or group that you enjoy. The list is literally endless, but if you are not as familiar with jazz musicians and ensembles, feel free to check back on some of the listenings we have done from the start of the year (in Classwork section) or email me and I'll give you a special recommendation based on what instrument you play! This could be fun :)

You will be creating a PowerPoint advertising this artist to your classmates. This is a week-long project where you will explore many facets of your favorite jazz musician and hopefully find out why they're your favorite. Hopefully when we share our research, you can find a new favorite musician!

Today and tomorrow, you will be adding to your PowerPoint on your favorite jazz musician by adding a song that they have composed and performed.

Either in your original PowerPoint on a new slide, OR in the provided template, answer the following:

I have attached a list of musicians if you would like to explore some new jazz musicians. There is always something to learn, and I'll guarantee you'll enjoy the listening experience!

Listen to the attached video performance by UNT's One O'Clock Lab Band of Cherokee featuring Sean Jones on trumpet. Think about how the soloists had to subdivide, and how the drummer and bassist keep the band in time. How about those solos?? Pretty incredible! Post your response to the performance in the comments. In a short paragraph, respond to the performance.

Today you have options. I would like to see you experiment with recording yourself playing music, but I don't want it to be a stressful experience for you. If you do not want to record yourself on SmartMusic (or cannot due to log-in issues/microphone issues) that's ok!
