Independent Study PE Information & Application will be available early May 2025. 
 
*All students applying must compete at the National level for their sport. Please read the documentation, once linked, carefully for eligibility. 
 
* Note: If approved, it is the responsibility of the student to turn in his/her Activity Log & Performance Evaluation forms (Exhibit D & E) 5 days prior to the end of each semester. Retain these forms for the grading periods.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Our PYLUSD Independent PE Application has recently been revised for the 2025–2026 school year.

Most notably, the submission due date has been updated to June 1st, providing our Independent PE Review Committee time to process applications prior to summer vacation.  

If your student’s application is approved/renewed for next school year, our school administration can best accommodate both scheduling and staffing with this information in hand.  Please see a summary of the corresponding criteria, qualifications, and documents required to apply for this program. 

PYLUSD (Grades 6–12)

Independent Study PE (ISPE) Application Checklist

📅 Application Timeline

☐ Submit complete application by June 1st (no incomplete or late packets accepted).

☐ New students may apply during registration.

☐ No midyear applications accepted (except for Universal Sports Institute students).


📘 Program Guidelines

Minimum Training Time: 10 hours/week for 18 weeks (180 hours/semester).

Credit Earned: Middle School - 1 semester credit; High School - 5 units/semester, up to 20 total.

Schedule Impact: Student receives shortened day and may take one fewer class.

No duplicate courses: Cannot be enrolled in both ISPE and school PE class.

Pre-approval by principal or designee required for participation and credit.


🧬 General Eligibility Requirements

☐ Student is enrolled in Grades 6–12.

☐ Student maintains a 2.0 unweighted GPA minimum.


🏆 Sport-Specific Qualification Requirements

🟦 For Team Sports (Middle & High School)

☐ Earned team membership via competitive tryout.

☐ Team has a high school-level practice schedule.

Team participates in at least 3 interstate competitions per year.

☐ At least one out-of-state OR qualified for national-level tournaments in each of the past two years.

Team is currently or recently ranked in Top 20 in CA OR Top 200 nationally.

🟩 For Individual Sports

☐ Middle School: Currently competing at the national or Olympic level as defined by a governing body.

☐ High School: Currently competing at the national or Olympic level as defined by a governing body.

☐ Student provides official rankings, competition schedule, & practice hours under a qualified instructor.


📑 Documentation Requirements (Incomplete Applications will not be accepted)

☐ Individual PE Plan (Exhibit B) including purpose, goals, daily activities, and instructor credentials.

☐ Contract & Liability Waiver (Exhibit C) signed by student, parent/guardian, and coach/instructor.

☐ Licensed Facility/Instructor Verification (Exhibit D) confirming instruction occurs in a licensed facility.

☐ Activity Logs & Performance Reports (Exhibit E) submitted quarterly by the coach/instructor.


⚠️ Other Important Notes

☐ Parents must supervise students during time released from regular PE class.

☐ Parents accept full responsibility for student transportation and safety during off-campus training.

☐ Appeals must be submitted to Educational Services within 7 days of denial with documentation.

☐ The District Study Team will make a final determination on appeals.
